A HUMMINGBIRD'S REST

A painting by Janet Weight Reed, England

A HUMMINGBIRD’S REST

I could if I tried harder, I could use the rest
In this cup, the day’s trill and duty at an end:

A respite from humming, a pause from flitting
From flower to bramble, from rose to sunshine.

No one will find me here for now until a night
Passes through, and me quiet in a mimic cup

Passing for a hummingbird, and I a cup of tea
Turned down for eventide to find itself a rest.
